How To Go From Nobody To Somebody

I was a complete nobody. No one had ever heard my name before.

I had never done anything special in my life. If I think about it the most remarkable thing I did until then was probably to quit my job.

Looking back it was a foolish thing to do. I was totally naive. And thought I'd conquer the world. Which of course... I didn't.

I ended up nowhere. And I had to learn it the hard way. I had to learn it the hard way that no one really cared about my mission. About my ideas. And the things I wanted to do in life.

Unfortunately, it took me more than two years to figure that out. It took me almost two years to realize that I had to change something. That I'd go totally broke if I kept doing what I was doing.

I realized that just putting my stuff out there and waiting for the entire world to find out about me and my stuff just didn't work. I had to learn it the hard way that no one would magically find out about me and my work.

I had to learn it the hard way that no one would read my blog, buy my books, buy my courses and whatever it was that I was offering.

I had to learn it the hard way that I wouldn't be able to somehow magically build my tribe. That my ideas wouldn't spread just like that.

And I get it. A lot of people out there say you have to show up. And put yourself out there.
And on and on and on. That this is the way to get noticed. I know.
I say the same thing.

But the truth is that it's just not enough anymore. It doesn't work anymore to just put your stuff out there and hope that people will find out about you. It might have worked a couple of years ago when it was less crowded...

But today it's just not enough anymore to put out great stuff and wait for people to show up.

It's just way too crowded out there. The Internet is way too crowded. Heck. The entire world is way too crowded...

And it doesn't really matter how good you think you are. Or how good you really are. No matter what all the gurus out there are telling you...

Putting yourself out there and showing up isn't enough anymore. You've gotta do a lot more than that to break through the noise.
You've gotta do more than that do become the signal.

And that's what I had to learn the hard way. And I did. I really did...

But you don't have to believe me. Just go out there and try. And see for yourself. With your own eyes. It's tough to stand out. And to get noticed. Really, really tough.

But what do I know? Maybe it'll work for you. Maybe it won't. Maybe you're part of the top 0.1%. Maybe you aren't. I clearly wasn't. And chances are that you aren't ether if you're still reading this...

Chances are that you've been struggling with the exact same things I've been struggling with...

Something that pretty much every creator, freelancer or anybody else who's out there on his or her own is struggling with. Something that pretty much everybody who puts his or her work out there into the world is struggling with.

Standing out, getting noticed and building your tribe is the hardest thing out there. No matter what.

So I decided I had to change things....

And instead of just putting my stuff, my work and my art out there I took the conscious decision to invest my time into actively building my audience.

I had to come up with ideas. A lot of ideas. Ideas that wouldn't cost a lot to execute. Simply because I didn't have a lot. As a matter of fact I didn't have any budget to invest in marketing and building an audience at all.

All I had was my laptop and an Internet connection. That was already pretty much about it. So I spent a lot of time testing things. Figuring out what worked and what didn't. I tested pretty much every platform out there. Facebook. Twitter. Quora. Medium. Pinterest. You name it...

And then I adapted. And refined. And tested again. And adapted again. And refined again. And now you're reading this right here. And you probably have read some of my other stuff in the past. So I guess it worked...
Over the years I found and created processes that helped me to get my ideas and my work to spread.

As of today my stuff was read, viewed or listened to by more than 3 million people across multiple platforms. More than 100,000 people are "consuming" my stuff every single month. Not including other people's websites.

And I'm now making a living creating things, putting my work out there and experimenting with all kinds of different things.

As you might be aware I'm now free to live and work wherever I want to. All I need is an Internet connection and my laptop. The best thing about it...? I don't even know how to write a single line of code.

And you know what was the only thing that helped me to get there?

To actively work on building my audience. My tribe...

I had tried tons of things before. Dozens of websites. Products. Services. You name it. And none of them really worked. Because I missed the audience part. I didn't build up a community. A tribe. I didn't have followers. Or fans...

So no one knew who I was. No one knew anything about the stuff I was offering. And no one was waiting for my stuff. So no one was reading when I had something to read. No one was listening when I had something to say. And no one was buying when I had something to sell.

And as of writing this I'm still spending a lot of my time building my audience. I'm addicted to finding new ways. New ways of building my audience. Of experimenting. Of putting my stuff out there. And getting my ideas to spread...
The only goal of this entire post is to share with you how important it is to build and grow your audience. And how you can get started...

Here's the truth...

If you're a creator and put stuff out there you're not just a creator. You're also a marketer. And a community builder. And a copy writer. Maybe you're all of this even more than you're a creator.

Simply because if you have no clue about this stuff, then you're going to create yourself to death. You're going to starve to death. And launch to crickets. Over and over again. Just like I did. Over and over again. For more than two years...

Like it or not but we're all in marketing. Every creator is in marketing. We're all marketers. We're all community builders. And copy writers. I didn't really like it either...

Until I realized that this was the only way. That this was the only way to get my ideas, my work and my voice to spread. Otherwise I'd probably have waited my entire life away waiting for that moment that people would find out about me...

So if you're a creator, if you put your work out there for the whole world to see, then you've gotta get started. You've gotta get started building your audience.

T
here really is no other way. You've gotta turn it into a habit. And I've done everything I can here to tell you how important it is.
So now you can either do it all on your own and spend years and thousands of dollars trying to figure out what works and what doesn't just like I did or...
