How spanking your children can affect their relationships in life
A new study out of the University of Texas may have you second guessing how you discipline your children. The study says children who are spanked are more likely to commit dating violence.
When it comes to spanking your children, every parent has a different viewpoint. Fargo resident, Amelia Gbieor says “well I would talk to him, you know try to do something first before resorting to spanking.” Kayla Fagre, mother of three, doesn’t believe spanking should ever be an option. “I believe open communication with your children is very important. It doesn’t need to come down to a level of using your hand. It’s supposed to be a hand of love to your child” Fagre says.
Professional Counselor at The Village Family Service Center, Kim Douglas, says spanking can send a different message than intended. “Spanking is always a message of ‘I am bad.’ And we want to maybe teach them there’s a better choice, rather than I am bad” Douglas explains.
But sometimes that message can be misunderstood. “Did you actually get the message that you were supposed to get? That you shouldn’t do that. Or did you get the message that mom and dad are mad?” Douglas adds.
Douglas says kids that are spanked are going to be more aggressive, which can also lead to other problems. “They hit other kids because again, that’s how they learn to problem solve” she reiterates.
She says a safe and loving environment is a big factor in how your kids make decisions and ultimately leads to more healthy relationships.
